How to Remove Pet Hair from Clothes Before Washing

Start with the garment label, lift loose surface hair, and keep washable rollers separate from tools made for the washing machine.

Before putting a furry garment in the wash, check its care label and remove loose surface hair with a tool suited to the fabric. For compatible dry clothing, use gentle passes with a clean, dry lint roller. Clean the pickup surface when it becomes covered with debris, then let the tool dry fully before using it again.

This is a preparation routine. It does not replace the garment’s washing instructions, and it does not make every fabric or laundry accessory suitable for every machine.

1. Read the garment’s care instructions

Check the label before treating the clothing. Be especially cautious around loose knits, raised decoration, damaged seams or a finish you have not cleaned before. Try a small hidden area first. Stop if the tool pulls threads, catches or changes the surface.

Lay the garment where you can support the fabric. Work on one section at a time so folds and edges do not bunch beneath the tool. A garment that needs specialist care should follow that care route rather than a general household shortcut.

2. Lift loose hair with a suitable roller

Our washable lint roller is intended for small touch-ups on compatible dry fabrics. Roll gently over the area with loose hair. It does not use peel-off refill sheets, and it is a fabric-cleaning tool, not a grooming tool for pets.

Check the pickup surface as you work. When it is covered with debris, pause to clean it instead of repeatedly pressing harder on the garment. The result depends on the fabric and the hair; tightly embedded hair may remain.

01Roll gently

Start on compatible, dry fabric.

02Rinse the tool

Pause when the pickup surface is covered.

03Let it dry

Use it again only after it is fully dry.

3. Clean the pickup surface and allow it to dry

Rinse the pickup surface as directed for this roller and let it dry fully before reuse or storage. Do not assume that a cleaning chemical, hot water or an abrasive pad is appropriate simply because the roller is washable. Use the supplied care instructions and contact us if they do not answer your question.

4. Follow the clothing and machine instructions

Once you have removed what you can from the surface, use the wash method permitted by the garment label and your machine’s manual. Avoid overloading the machine. Check pockets and maintain the washer as its manufacturer directs.

If you will tumble-dry the garment, first confirm that its care label allows it and follow the dryer’s lint-screen cleaning instructions. This guide does not recommend a dryer-first treatment for every garment.

Common questions

Can I use the washable roller while it is still wet?

Let this roller dry fully before using it again on clothing. Start with a dry, compatible fabric surface.

Will the routine remove every hair?

No result is guaranteed for every fabric or hair type. The roller is intended for loose surface hair and small touch-ups.

Can I use it on delicate clothing?

There is no blanket approval for delicate fabrics. Follow the garment maker’s advice, test a hidden area, and stop if the surface changes.
